Hi y'all,

quick question. I have been looking at various bits of security on the market to prevent the copying of my webcontent. Graphic stealing is of no concern to me but copy and pasting my text is. I wish to provide lots of info online but i dont want somoene to come along and grab it all with great ease. Ive therefore looked at security software that disables printing, disables text selection, disables right-clicking of the mouse etc. All are useless if someone can still view my source code where the info is loacated. To get around this, most of these security software also encrypt the HTML file so that the source is not ledgible. However, my question is that if all my text within the body of the HTML page is encrypted in my source, how can robots and spiders get a feel for what my site content is? Is there any way around my poblem? Will appreciate any support.

Thanks.

WWW,
In my opinion.....Forget about all of that...
If I can see your page on my monitor I can copy any part or all of it.
If you put anything on the Internet that can be viewed it can also be copied.

I totally agree. What stops people copying books in a library, for instance? Copyright laws, not copy protection.
If someone is determined enough they WILL copy your code/images/whatever. Remember that any page you view on the internet is stored as a temporary file on your hard drive, where it can easily be edited/copied.

If you think that your content is likely to be ripped off, be vigilant and shut down any infringing sites. It's easy enough to find copies of your content by using search engines, and if the offenders aren't in search engines, no-one else will see them either.

World Wide Wonder, welcome to WebmasterWorld

I agree, technical solutions won't absolutely prevent this from happening. Make sure you document your site's content and go after any body copying it.

Thanks for your replies, althogh none of you actually answered my dilema. I needed to know if for the sake of SEO, i shouldnt encrypt my HTML filesas as the body text would not be readable by spiders. I need to know if this would be the case? As for viewing my site on your screen and copying it, of course i know this already as you can easily do a screen print but with regards to my text, i didn't want anyone being able to take my work away in the format of a document for instance. If they have it as an image, it makes it a lot more difficult to manipulate that info later. So by not being able to highlight the text and copying it to the clipboard, means that people would be far less likely to take my info to use themselves.

But, i do appreciate your replies a great deal, any real suggestions as to what i can do to prevent copying? I know that there is no 100% security but through the use of several tactics at once, it would make it less attractive to anyone try.

thanks.

My answer would be if it's readable by a browser it's readable by a bot.
You can always test it by running the secured page through the Sim spider [searchengineworld.com].

I wasn't refering to a screen shot, I meant code.
Yes, test a page with a spider or Lynx to see if you can get the result you are looking for.
But I sure wouldnt go through a bunch of extra work to impliment something that can be defeated by most web savy users.

Thanks again guys.

I knew of HTML validators but didn't realise there were sim spiders. Have used the link you provided and will continue to with otehr sites of mine to see how they go. I will ponder over this issue and think of the best way round it. Thanks for making me welcome in this forum and i will return again soon.

Kind regards
