I hope I am not off topic here.I am a business consultant and have just been charged with developing a strategy for our commercial web site,B2C. regarding services of hosting and on going web development. My client is fed up with the ad agency who has done the initial development and then subs hosting to Verisign, and wants to take control. So I am thinking that I need to come up with a plan to contract these services, stay in control and obviously pay less for service than the agency.
As we plan to add product and make content changes, our site also has a lot of graphic content, am I best to look for a design firm,or should I look for an individual designer? Once I hire, will the designer or firm have a relationship with a web hosting company? Or am I safe to choose a hosting company on my own, based on services required?
Although we want to save money, we also can not compromise uptime and lost time should a lone designer be unavailable. This is why I am thinking of going with a firm. I would appreciate any advise as to my best options.
Thanks!

Something to consider may be to find a hosting company you like (I'd recommend pair.com or westhost.com) and get the site moved over then you can contract either a design firm or lone wolf and just tell them where the site is. That way you're not tied to them - you can lock them out the site anytime you want if they aren't performing for you. It gives you some control.
