Which OS is better?

Win 98, 2K or XP?

I am getting a new PC

Athlon 1300 XP
512 MB Ram
120 GB HD (you know, like I *have* to try all the software ;) )
DVD
CD RW

and was thinking what OS to use. Currently on all the PC's we have 98 SE. So what would be the best option for this new PC?

Win 98 SE
Win 2000
Win XP

I have heard a lot about XP but have never tried it? anyone care to share their experience with above OS?

Thanks for the help.

Depends what you want out of life!

The way of the future will be XP which is really just 2000 for consumers (read extra bells+whistles and product activation), 98 OTOH is not as stable as the others as it's still based on the 9X core but is going to be properly backwards compatible with applications and games.

My advice would be go with 2000 for the moment if you value speed over beauty because it's very stable, is pretty lean & mean (as windows goes) and you don't have to deal with product activation and so you can happily tweak, repartition, reformat and re-install 'til your heart's content without a worry.

When the next version of windows trots along in a year or two then you can judge if it's worth the upgrade or whether you can live with 2000 for another year or two.

On the other hand if you want an easy life and aren't ultra techical then you should get along just fine with XP as it is just as stable as 2000 if not more so but it has the advantage of being designed with the typical desktop user in mind rather than paying homage to it's NT heritage.

2000, it is very stable and XP is getting patches constantly. I always wait a while before I upgrade and XP hasn't been out long enough for me.

XP.

The whole office switched over awhile back, and I also upgraded my home computers to XP, with very few problems*

Previously, I had Win 2000 installed and I would make the change again.

*This is a Microsoft product we are talking about, so, I consider a few problems as acceptable. ;)

I like 2000 very much. Well, as much as anyone can actually *like* a Microsoft product.

I didn't like XP. Thought it was too cartoonish, and it was a resource hog.

But how can you say which is best? It's all open to opinion.

If you're getting a new computer, you might as well get the latest OS. It's not like you get a lot of choices......

Something to think about or look into is games. If you play lots of games will they play on 2000 or do they require XP? And a year from now will the newest games require XP?

That would be a question I would ask.

I made the switch to XP one year ago this week compliments of a client. I would have waited if I would have had to pay for it.
In that years time I have had no system crashes at all.
The first thing I did was to turn off all the bubble gum colors and balloon pop ups, and then I turned off about half of the processes that load by default. I don’t see any system lag when running Photo Shop or any other program and this machine only has 256K of memory.

I have machines running 98, NT4, Win2K & XP and the XP machine is growing on me. I'd say it's a toss-up between 2000 & XP for stability and ease of use.

If I were you I would go for XP, but would also consider getting a DVD RW rather than a CD RW.

imho win2k is best. it's not a that gaming-relevant computer but for q3a its alright and for work it really good and stable. but nevertheless, if your hardware is not compatible with 2k, then it sucks.

hum.....

I guess after all this posts, I should totally forget about Win 98 ;)

On weekends I do play lot of games and I guess from that point of view XP seems good, however, my main concern with XP is

* How often does it contact its maker (M$) and what info does it send back? or it just contacts one time during installation?

I have both Win2k and Win98Se, 2K for the workhorse and 98 for the backup. Both are stable, but I feel 2k to be better. I have not yet tried XP for the reasons Korkus gives, hasn't been out long enough yet for me.

AFAIK, XP only phones home once in the begining, unless you make a major hardware change. Then it phones home again.

xp might be better for games, because the later directx for win2k is sluggy, but every xp system i've seen was really slow. slowlier on a late computer then my win98se on a pII 333. gosh.

I've been playing with XP for the last couple of months.

I set up my machine as a dual boot (98SE/XP). I wanted to test it before committing to moving everthing over to a relatively new OS and I have to say that XP is getting the nod more and more.

It's almost like having a new machine, 533Mhz K6 with 256MB, to me. And I haven't had a single crash yet.

Related question - If I go from 98 to 2k will I have to upgrade many programmes I use. like PS, PSP, Arachnophilia, ws_ftp95, Corel draw, etc....?

You should have no problems with the graphics programs.

He, he, thanx guys... :)
Might just give it a whirl, I'm getting a little fed up with the blue screen every time I switch on - sorry, boot up ;)

I tried to switch to xp awhile back but ran into quite a few mission critical incompatabilities. So -- for better or for worse -- I stick with 98se.

When getting a new box, always use the latest software. If you've noticed, most of the replies that used 2k hadn't yet tried xp and most of the one using xp liked it.

Win 2K is my vote - at least until my dev apps are finally ported to Linux. :)

Piece of advice. Never buy into an M$ OS until it has gone through at least 2 minor upgrades. For example v1.0 is the initial release - wait until v 1.2 or 1.3. XP - far too new. Better if you can wait for the first Service Pack to be released.

Come to think of it - it's a bad sign when I measure the stability of an OS by what SP they release...

Well after trying on 98SE, 2k and XP, I will have to admin that XP comes out to be the best. Also, it seems for fun.

But in any event, it was very clear that 98SE was no way as good as 2k or XP - but I will also agree with Brett about few software not working on XP.

Avoid Win98 like the plague. Win2k/XP are far superior, no question.

Bear in mind Win2K has a few nice extras over Win2k such as remote desktop and built-in CD writing: much of the CD writing software for Win2k will blue screen your machine, so that can be a little nasty..
