I've been reading my LangaList Standard Edition 2003-01-13 newletter [langa.com...] which states in part:

There's more trouble with Ad-Aware (the free anti-spyware tool from Lavasoft). ... A number of readers ... pointed to a disturbing article at
[spywareinfo.com...] that argues that it's time to stop using Ad-Aware.

Guess it's time to do an alternative.

I think I'm willing to wait a little longer before I change:

Group conciousness is a funny thing. I posted this in another thread yesterday. I discovered that Bulletproof has a product that looks and runs exactly like adaware and it still has weekly or so updates. I have no idea if the two are related but except for a few graphics tweaks the operation is exactly the same!

Until they have released a new version and prove that they'll continue providing regular updates I've deleted all AdAware software and am using something else...

Update

When I first posted this thread I was using 5.81. Last evening I went to LS's website and downloaded 5.83.

I removed the older version and installed 5.83. This morning I used RefUpdate 2.0 and successfully downloaded and installed an update to it.

By the way, this "Update" post does not show up on the [webmasterworld.com...] recent updates page.

Also, some of my 'previously flagged' threads are no longer flagged.

This morning I used RefUpdate 2.0...

Keep in mind that this has not been updated since September. A lot of people more learned than I have warned against using this.

The perfect Internet Business.
Would have two divisions..
1. Creates spyware
2. "Invents" a spyware removal tool.

I installed bulletproofsoft: found one spyware in the registry key that Adware didn't find!

That is true. At the time I was using 5.81 (there were/are no updates for that version because Ad-Aware only provides support for two versions back).

Having moved up to 5.83, I found it good to have an update for that version anyway.

As a comparison, I dl'd BPS (BulletProof) this morning and ran it minutes after running and cleaning with Ad-Aware 5.83.

Ad-Aware found a couple surveillance cookies, BulletProof found nothing and it took twice as long to run.

The important thing here is that everyone should run some type of spyware detection/elimination tool regardless of personal preferences.

As for me, I think I'll stick with Ad-Aware.

Check out SpyBot-Search & Destroy as well...it's free and pretty powerful.

pendanticist,

What version signature file did you get when you updated? I think 042-24.09.2002 (read that Sepember 24 2002) is the latest.

Angiolo, doesn't it look and work exactly like adware, just much more updated?
It's very strange, I wonder if they bought the rights to the engine...

I just removed Adaware. Installed SpyBot-Search & Destroy (free) and it found about a dozen scumwares that Adaware had missed.

Hi amznVibe!

It looks very similar. I appreciate that you have more tools too.

I installed bulletpforsoft at my computer at home too.

I don't kno why, but the program, when is scanning the Key logger is going very very low (the computer seems top run at 1 Mhz..).

There is a spyware in the register that it is not possible to delete: you can delete it, but it reappear at any new boot:

Registry Key Value Type = Hijacker - FreeScratchAndWin:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\CONTROL\SHUTDOWN\]
"SetupProgramRan"=dword:00000002

Do you have any suggestion on what can I do?

Well, I am not giving this as advice: but if I had the problem and could not find an answer at ThiefWare.com forums or other spyware discussion boards, I would try using your bulletproofsoft or spybot (or whatever) and delete it again, then check add/remove programs and remove it if it's there. Then I would do a Start > Search > for files and see if any residual files are present and delete if found. Finally, I would go to Start > Run and type: msconfig and hit Enter. From the pop-up, I would choose "start-up items" and if that program is listed, uncheck it. Then I would re-boot, choosing "don't show me this again" when a pop-up alerts me that my registry has been altered for trouble shooting purposes. That's what I would do if I had that problem :)

They prompt says: "This product is not available until the beginning of February"

Oh, this is the most recent url for Ad-aware 6 as they did some shuffling about.

Ad-Aware Plus 6.00 build 158 has been floating around. So its definitely not vaporware. ;)

I can't say I like their new slogan at all, a tad offensive to me (and that takes a bit to happen)

(from their site) ad-aware: the morning after pill for the internet

[lavasoft.de...] still takes you where it's at

http://www.lavasoft.de still takes you where it's at

which automatically re-directs you to....of all places [lavasoft3.element5.com...] and if you're going to dl it you'd then end up at [lavasoft3.element5.com...] .

As I stated they've shuffled things around a bit.
