Major Problem With IE6

Can't access any websites!

Hi,

Happy New Year All!

Unfortunately, I'm in need of some urgent help! :(

My PC has decided to welcome me back to work with a major problem: IE6 will not let me access ANY websites.

I am not on a Network, but for some reason when trying to access a website, it says "connecting to 127.0.0.1" (localhost?) in the lower browser area and then gives a "Page Cannot Be Displayed" error.

I've tried uninstalling & reinstalling the IE6 service packs, have turned off my anti-virus software, uninstalled any new programmes...everything I can think of...but without success!

ANY help would be much appreciated - I'm at my wits end!

Have you tried using "ping" to see if you have any network connection at all?

It could be your network, network card, bad cables, router, modem, or a host of other issues, not just your browser.

I would check Tools, Internet Options, Connections, Lan Settings. Is your proxy turned on? Try turning it off, restart your browser, and try hitting the sites.

The most common 127.0.0.1 issue I run across is related to ad-filtering or a browser service that is either turned off or improperly configured.

Thanks for the quick responses!

ipconfig and ping works OK for local & remote IPs.

LAN proxy settings are off (I've tried "on" too), but no joy.

I am connected via AOL at the moment; the AOL browser works OK but opening IE6 by itself does not give me access to any wesites and is giving the error.

P.S. I had forgotten how much of a nightmare the AOL browser is to use!

Can you give us a more descriptive error message by going to Tools, Internet Options, Advanced tab. Deselect the "Show friendly error messages" and tell us the specific error you are getting. Can you visit webmasterworld.com by IP? [64.33.51.156?...]

Friendly error messages are off. The lower browser area initially says "Opening page [64.33.51.156...] ", then it changes to "connecting to site 127.0.0.1" and displays the following:

The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.

If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly.

To check your connection settings, click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Connections tab, click Settings. The settings should match those provided by your local area network (LAN) administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).
If your Network Administrator has enabled it, Microsoft Windows can examine your network and automatically discover network connection settings.
If you would like Windows to try and discover them,
click Detect Network Settings

Well, without being able to put my hands on your computer, I'm stumped.

You say you can access the net with your AOL browser?

Then IE should work as well.

Maybe you have a virus. Have you tried running a virus scan?

No viruses/trojans/spyware detected.

It must be something to do with the TCP/IP stuff. The only thing that I've found is that 127.0.0.1 was in the advanced LAN proxy settings. Howver, LAN is turned off so I don't have a clue what's going on! :(

AOL browser is OK, and I can send email using Outlook Express, but the email programme won't display any online images and IE6 browser by itself still gives the error.

To make matters worse, my PC supplier told me today that I can't repair my Windows installation with the bootable CD provided (some configuration thingy), only do a full format!

If there are any Windows Admin gurus with advice, I'd appreciate it. Thanks to everyone that's tried to help so far.

Have you tried uninstalling IE6, reboot, then reinstall IE6? Could be a corrupt DLL files that need to be replaced.
