Visits down in December big time

Because of the Hollidays

My visits here in December as gone from 400.000 to 240.000 a month, but I think that has something to do with, that the page is not a retail web site, I think most information-free sites has a down time in December.

What do you think?

No doubt in my mind, zeus. My sites are highly seasonal, and for 4 or 5 years now, Christmas Day has been the absolute bottom. Now if I can just get through March Madness....

Well it first time our page has a Christmas, but whats in March.

December 25th is always my slowest day. Funny thing, December 16 was my highest traffic volume day and then a little over a week later i get the slowest day.

March Madness is a basketball fever that infects, in particular, the Eastern US. I don't take a hit from anything, not even the Olympics, SuperBowl, World Series, like the one I get during the final games. Some evenings, I can even guess when the game ends because the traffic suddenly spikes.

I was suprised at how much traffic I got on Christmas this year. It was only off around 10-15% of a normal Wednesday.

I saw more traffic on Christmas than past Decembers, but conversions were non-existent. I attribute some of the increase to the increasing trend of "surfing for entertainment" and also the rising US phenom of dual-media usage [emarketer.com].

According to a 2002 survey of over 7,800 US consumers from BIGresearch, simultaneous media usage is a regular occurrence for roughly 50% of the US population.

How about traffic SINCE Christmas? I've got my site split into two halves - one's a store with some information and one's an information site with some products. Before Christmas (traffic was down compared to November) my store side of the site got the bulk of the traffic. Now, my store side has decreased dramatically, but the information side has increased to where this week's combined traffic has been about 10% above the week before Christmas' traffic. Interestingly, sales are only down about 35%, but they're all (er, most) being generated from the "info" side of the site. I was fully prepared to lose 70-80% of the sales after Christmas time. Maybe that'll still happen in January, we'll see.

I'd imagine that most people who have information sites would see a slight increase in traffic since Christmas due to all of the computers under the Christmas trees. No?

Do you ever try to match the weather in your area (countries) w/ traffic? I've noticed more traffic (and sales) on weekends where several parts of the US have stormy weather. Here in New England, we had the threat of stormy weather on Christmas. Most of the folks stayed home, rather than venture out. I saw more traffic on my sites (some just sales, some just information)than I expected.

One site seemed to have taken a 6 day hiatus over Christmas, but orders have come back with a bang since then. Must be christmas money.

My stats seamed to be pretty steady on average until the 16th dec then took a drop of about 20% took a stepp back up on the 28th but back down now. I am guesing that next monday things will be back to normal.

We're an ecommerce site, but our products aren't usually bought as gifts. On the web, and in our stores, December is a slow month. Yes, December 23 thru 26 are our slowest web traffic days of the year, off about 50%-60% from normal. Mid-January, however, is usually roaring.

All holidays are slow on the web for us, usually starting about three days before.

Holidays? Humbug!
