How Important do you thing website awards really are?

I know that you can virtually display anything on a site...but they wouldn't exist if it were altogether not important would it?

Interested to know is all

I'm not expert, not by a long shot, but the majority of 'web awards' I stumble across while surfing seem to
prettymuch fall into the cubbyhole of

You get a lil' graphic for your site, but wait,
there's more! I also get an incoming link to
my site from your site. It's almost Jeff Foxworthy
type of advertising, i.e. 'here's your sign'

No awards, no sense of loss or shame either

The only awards I'm interested in show up in my mailbox. I take those to the bank.

The very first website I designed (what a load of tosh that was!) won a "silver webmaster award", great! I got a little award banner to put on the site (linking back to them, obviously)and was then offered the chance to buy a certificate of the award for $19.99.

I didn't bother.
