I would like to start playing atround with webcams.

Ideally I would like to have the webcam in one building and be able to watch it on my comp in another building the two of which are completely unconnected.

Do you think this is possible? and can any of you from first hand experience recommend any good, durable and hi res cameras and software needed to run them?

Not only is it possible - it is quite easy.

I use Kabcam for software- I've been really pleased with it. I have a 3Com Home connect camera - I find it very hard to get sharp focus, although the low light capabilities are very nice.

I rigged my whole set-up together a few years ago - I am sure you can find a much better camera now.

By the way - are you looking to stream video from the webcam, or just pull up a still image at a fixed time interval?

Mardi_Gras - thanks I am looking to stream. I also do not know how it will work, as it will be entirely remote. What is your camera attached to?

Well, you have to be hooked up to something :)

There are solutions which will just let you hook directly to a phone line (built-in modem, no computer required). But as you know, streaming eats bandwidth. You will need some sort of wide pipe attached to the camera, even if an actual computer is not present.
