I'm having a hellish time with verio(way too expensive), and I'm thinking about migrating to other WH company, any tips? The best?(is it cheap, fast, with lots of bandwidth and allows huge amounts of data transfer?)
I'm not sure if I'm going against the TOS here...
Thanks in advance!

There have been many posts here regarding changing to another host. A quick search for "new web site host" yielded these results [searchengineworld.com]. This Board is hosted by WestHost [westhost.com].

The 2 hosts that come up regularly here when people ask about hosting are: www.pair.com and www.westhost.com

I have sites with both and have had no complaints about either.

I too have sites with both Pair and Westhost. Do note that if you plan to use MySQL, Westhost will only allow you to access your database through telnet, which can be a bit clumsy. Pair has no such restriction. On the other hand, Pair limits mailing lists to two, but WestHost offers unlimited mailing lists.

Westhost may offer some less expensive hosting options. If you go with them, be sure to mention Brett as the referrer so he can get a credit.

Verio might be pricy, but they offer excellent service by telephone, 24 hours a day if you need it.

The less expensive hosters don't offer that. It all depends what you are comfortable with.

My first host was a $6.95/month powerhouse. But forget about any kind of service that was useful.

Thanks for the replies. More info...
We're on the platinum plan, with a BW limit of 17.5 GB. We're now (october isn't over yet) at 26 GB of BW and counting. We're gonna have to pay more than US$700 only on BW excess this month(don't get me started about last month). That is awful, at least. We've been looking for a local webhosting comp, but Peru is not well known for its webhosting comps, you know? We're now focusing on bandwidth(like in data transfer) and database support(mySQL-PHP), maybe a VPS could do...

So far, we're looking at(add a ".com"):
pair
webhost
carolinacoolhost
datapipe
hostway

Any tips/suggestions?
Thanks in advance, again...

Without getting into specific hosts, here are some general stats on 4000+ hosting plans (in USD).

6.7% of plans offer more than 30 gigs per month.
12% of plans claim to offer unlimited bandwidth.

Data Transfer Price/GB *
Mean = $6.60 **
Median = $4.99

* base plans, not overages
** minus the top/bottom 5%

gutabo, you are looking at some of the well-known hosts with 30+ GB. Contact me if you cannot find a plan that meets your requirements.

I hope to add full data on Price/GB of additional transfer soon, but probably not soon enough for your situation. All I can say is read the fine print very closely, because overages range from a few dollars per gig to to well over $100 per gig.

Let's highlight claim because there is no such thing as unlimited bandwidth. Just try to use it and you will learn that lesson quickly.

Verio might be pricy, but they offer excellent service by telephone

Let's see, Verio offers 17 gigs of BW for $250 month, Pair offers 15 gigs for $30 month. That customer servce better be really good for an extra $2640 per year :)

I have no affiliation with Pair other than hosting a site there; I just think that's a rather marked price differential.

Let's highlight 'claim'

Lets. I really only included it as a footnote that these plans were not (and could not) be included in the calculations that followed.

The average hosting plan includes around 6 GB, and on average the unlimited plans are priced a bit below the specified plans, so...

What I don't get about Verio is why they call so much? I have a few dozen domains hosted with them, and they seem to call me once a week atleast, to see if there's anything they can do to help.

Its more annoying than helpful.

Anyone else notice this?
