Which interface (website look and feel) in your opinion is THE MOST recognizable and hence instinctive to use?.

imo, its the Google results page which comes up tops?. Any other suggestions?.

I think on a ecommerce point of view you get alot of shop in the box type sites which are horrible to use but because there are so many you know then inside out.

From a usability stance anything which is clean and easy to find products with a big button add to basket, checkout

google, wisenut, AV all nice clean sites with a big button "search"

eCommerce recognisable: I would say Amazon?

but not necessarily instinctive to use though..

were they the first who popularised the tabs?

BTW, who was the first to start with the shopping cart?

The first shopping cart was made 1993. There were several that came out right around the same time. There were other ordering systems before that, but they were all developed by major companies just for their sites. I think the first one readily available for someone to just buy and plug into their web site was Autocart, though there were a few others that all came out within a few weeks of each other, so that may not have been the first. I'm not certain who Autocart's first client was, but I've got to talk to the guy later on today, so I'll try to remember to ask him.

If we're talking in terms of sheer volume of use by the masses and not in terms of good web design, then what about Hotmail and Yahoo mail?

Theyve got to be some of the most used layouts on the web.

I agree with vitaplease. It must be amazon. Every bookseller on the net I have seen have practically copied their design and probably many others too.

Very true, but interestingly enough it doesn't seem to put users off - they learn the system quickly and then feel comfortable using it.

Bit off topic, but regarding Amazon, I think it has nothing to do with the interface, that's just a branding thing.
