Got up this morning and tried to log on to my machine (win Xp). As luck would have it my profile was corrupted and for someone as technically challenged as myself this was a big deal. I managed to restore most of the files but sadly I lost all of my email stuff. It's not the end of the world, but it could have been if my customer information had not been sitting on a remote server. Whew!

I will never allow this to happen again. Cross my heart, I really mean it this time with sugar on top and everything. Today is the day I get set up with a proper back-up system.

Back up your stuff today...... It could happen to you.

hey....it's true. My computer at work went out today...totally shot. Safe mode doesn't work-NOTHING works.

Am I bothered? Nope. Every important thing was backed up.

Grabbed a spare-and I'm back.

This is the second time that computer went out-still under warranty. It just kept restarting....and crashing...and restarting.

Do your back-ups! (And keep a stripped down older computer in the closet so you can at least read WebmasterWorld...and ask questions if necessary:>)

Ugh... I went to the trouble of bringing my laptop to PubConference (along with a digital camera & my Visor). Then I figured it was too much hassle to back up my photos every night, since the SmartMedia card still had plenty of room left and I was soo tired and etc.

So... you guessed it. Tuesday, while touring a castle in Yorkshire, my camera made an ominous beeping noise. There went all my photos. poof. gone.

If I'd backed up the photos onto the laptop on Friday and Sunday nights, I only would have lost about 20 photos. As it is, I lost every single one of almost 100 pictures.

If I wasn't going back to England for the next PubCon, I'd have broken down sobbing. As it is, I'm sure Stonehenge, et. al. will still be there when I return.

mivox - I've heard of some software that is reaaly good at recovering data from smart cards and compact flash etc. I'll try and track it down.

after my hard drive failure I started using www.handybackup.com - seems to do the job pretty well.

I found a shareware program called Salvage for Mac. The demo recovered the first two images, and told me there were 78 more to be recovered if I paid the fee... (of course there are a gazillion recovery programs for Windows, but the NT machine here is so old, it doesn't have a USB port for my smart media card reader!)

So of course, I paid. Now I'm just waiting for the unlock code to arrive in my email... will report back if I get good results.

Done. A 60 gig external drive with handy back up (thanks Oilman).

Now I am going to clean my PC and get it nice and organised. Tomorrow....maybe.
