profitech, how much people make with web sites can have so many variables it's not even possible to list them all. It depends in part whether it's a brochure site for a brick and mortar or strictly online service business or products, whether it's affiliate or direct, and in the case of products, the mileage can vary widely.

A lot depends on the specific market being targeted, the demographics, whether the goods are durable or expendible, and whether there's a high or low margin in mark-up, as well as the fact that some products sell better online than others and some are perennial, while others have a seasonal aspect.

It can also depend on the quality and suitability of the design for the product and the target demographic of the potential market, the competition level in a given market area and how the site is promoted. A high conversion product on the 6th page of search engine queries won't have the same traffic level as one in the top 5, and out of the top ones, some will convert better than others.

Some sites utilize SEO, some PPC, and some have an added advantage of additional marketing opportunities, like networking, effective link traffic strategies, or rely on word of mouth and referrals.

You can see that there's no set truth, and generally people won't divulge their specifics. Some can earn six figures with net businesses, while others are going for a few hundred a month walking_around money.

Check out our Ecommerce and Ecommerce Promotion [webmasterworld.com] forum for payment options, there have been some excellent discussions.

One of the moderators in our Advertising forum, Drastic, did a fabulous post a while back about choosing affiliate sites to do that includes some ideas that have tremendous insightful value for those who do other types of sites also. There's inevitably a better chance of success if someone pursues a net business related to what they have knowledge about or a passionate interest in. That makes it much easier to do a better site, which is one of the key ingredients for success. Beyond that, anything someone needs to know about successfully promoting and growing their site is right here at WebmasterWorld.
