Site updates - how do you use your time?

ie, on optimising, on content, on promotion, etc

Hows does the time you spend working on your site each month break down?

I know it must differ from site to site, but in general?

Id personally say that I spend more time on content and marketing than optimising just now (its different if your setting up a new site, but generally on a month to month basis).

content 50%
requesting links 10%
optimising 10%
checking various stats 30%

(keeping up to date at WW - nearly as much time as i spend on my site!) :)

you seem to spend a lot of time on stats?

Optimising (including time spent on Webmaster World) 65%
online marketings 20%
requesting links - 13%
stats - 2%
content - we have two dedicated peeps that do content all day everyday.

Hm, never thought about that one.

For my primary site, here is a guess:

content maintenace: 25%
new content: 35%
customer support: 20%
marketing: 20%

I very rarely if ever check stats since my site is a subscription site. I know when people are logged on and I get an email if they look at the demo.

jackofalltrades in my humble opinion your time spent with your stats is what will set you apart eventually so I encourage you to keep it up.

thank you.

i wish i knew what it all meant, but ill keep it up all the same! :)

I am spending more and more time on content now though - IMHO - thats whatll bring the users back.

Given all the fuss about the update this month id rather my users only had to search for my site once - any subsequent visits should be from bookmarks, or typing in the URL and only content can do that.

cheers!

had i realised i wouldnt have spent so long replying to it, but its to the benfit of the users at the end of the day (the site went live this morning), so thanks again! :).

I have another site and I got all my mates to register a post random threads (even that was only live last week!).

Ive done a similar thing with this one (on top of some blatant and surprisingly unoticed user poaching from a competitor!). I justify it to myself that its an adivce site and their site is a sales site, so the users will want to come to my site anyway! ;) (only rivaled by google for referals for my other site!).

Do you know if snitz forums content show up in serps?

Good question, jack..

Let's see..

Updating/new content - 20%
Tweaking Design - 10%
Marketing - 20%
Optimising - 25%
Checking various stats - 25%
Pulling my hair out, losing sleep and wondering what went wrong while drinking coffee and chain smoking - 50%

..okay, I made that last one up.

Site updating: 5%
Checking and responding to emails: 10%
Promotion, including checking stats: 35%
Packing orders (and sending): 50%

All approx of course, packing orders takes priority and includes ordering from supplers and so on.

Promotion includes checking stats and recording information about such. Including log files, Google AdWords, Overture etc.

I look after three sites...I don't really work on a weekly basis...I often do long spells of working almost entirely on content, at other times it's all SEO, sometimes it's admin

I'd guess at, over a year:

20% adding new content (I tend to hire in a writer/researcher)
10% adding new languages
10% working on accessibility/usability
5% improving design (again hired in)
5% chasing funding
10% responding to feedback
15% researching/training/keeping up
5% analysing stats
5% chasing incoming links
10% dealing with management, writing reports etc
5% socialising, drinking coffee, taking cig breaks etc
