I have a website where I maybe have earned 100$ in a year, but I simply love to look at my logs I maybe do that 10 times a day, maybe it is the hope for that, if more people is on your site the better changes there is for a little more cash.

I must say that ofcause Im also interested in the project, but those logs I just have to see how many has been on the site Im gone from 97 visits in a month to now 64.000 visits a month.

it's because we love and care for our site. Maybe we make friends becuase of it. And we love providing useful or entertaining content to a wide potential audience.

Yep, I rarely get anything from my profile site (biz) but I keep adding stuff to it from time to time and it's one of my favorite sites ;)

I'm even in a rather slow re-design that takes up time that could be spent working on sites that make me money....

yeah I can relate to that I've been working on my pet now for about 3 years loads of traffic and I don't want to think about the man hours gone into it, but I've earned more in one month from another site that took 3 weeks to build

I read a great article on the subject, but can't remember where. The gist of the article was: Why does everyone expect me to be making money off my web site?

If I play piano for a hobby, no one expects me to put a jar on the piano everytime I sit down and play. I spend time watching TV (well not anymore!) and people don't expect me to make money by watching TV.

So a website can be a hobby or avocation. It doesn't have to make money. We are not Ferengi - we're not mercenaries all the time.

Back at the beginning of the web bubble I remember hearing a news story about Charles Manson. He was up for another parole hearing, but decided to actually skip it that time - he was too busy working on his web site. This was back in 96 or 95.

>We are not Ferengi :)

Rule of acquisition no:1456 "don't spend more than 10 hrs a day working on your hobby :)

Glad to see another DS9 fan

I am a saddo, I get paid well to look after 5 websites all day, what do I do when I get home?

I spend another 4 or 5 hours a night tweeking, reading this forum and looking at my logs, all for free

my boss must be a very happy man , I am a very sad person indeed.

My "hobby" site, in my profile, has cost me way more money than I will ever make from it! I dunno, I guess I just love seeing all the people enjoying it, and receiving emails from the visitors, write ups in newspapers, we were mentioned on TV a few times, too!

This truly isn't about the money.

My sites that don't make me money are testers. I can message keyword density, link text, and other thing to experiment with traffic. They don't make any money so I can be a little more liberal with them.

If you sell something on the site which is directly related to your visitors, is should be a real money maker with this kind of traffic.

If your site is an online presence for a brick-and-mortar/real-life biz, there are certain intangibles involved.

A clean, easy to navigate, creative, informative, valuable website confers those same qualities upon your biz/product.

I think it also relates to the fact that it is usually more satisfying to win a $1 bet with a good friend as opposed to winning a $20 hand of blackjack at a casino. You have a relationship with the friend and can harass him and rub it in for months but you don't really care about the casino. When I make a little meaningless sale with some of my sites I care about I jump for joy but I don't get too excited (my bank account does though) about a big sale on my sites I don't care about.
