I am curious as to who uses which SE's and why. Personally, I rarely use anything other than Google anymore. There is the odd time that I use Alltheweb ... but it is seldom.

Google, the toolbar is just too handy.

I would say, it is about time, AllTheWeb create their own Toolbar :) But it would still Lack Google PR Feature and hence won't/might not be used much.

Chalk up two for Google and Toolbar. I'll sometimes be found deep within the ODP, mainly looking for broad coverage as opposed to nail-on-the-head. Hey, I feel a great multi-hyphenated-domain-name coming on.

I've been using Google exclusively for almost two years. I normally search from the toolbar too, and did long before I knew what PR was :)

Since I've been here I've also used DMOZ occasionally as a starting place when I was researching a specific topic, particularly when I want websites relevant to a certain location.

Searching other than the different Google search services:

- Altavista for wildcard searches [webmasterworld.com]

- www.Scirus.com for journal sources on scientific publications plus others.

- Ixquick or Copernic for searching for companies not listed in Google (they do exist).

- Alltheweb for full back-links [webmasterworld.com] plus some more advanced searching facilities.

- [archive.org...] for historical checks

- Overture suggestion and Wordtracker for popular keywords

- Altavista Prisma and Teoma refine for related subjects/topics to normal search queries.

- researchbuzz.com for the number of fresh pages in Google

- Cometsystems for Google archive/cache dates.

Google with the toolbar is just too convenient... Alltheweb for variety and for checking pages which link to us with PR under 4. Vivisimo is good for variety as well, just once in a while.

Always use Google with the toolbar for daily searches of all kinds. Sometimes use Ixquick, other engines here and there. Go through Yahoo and ODP for category info too.

Google and FAST. Deep databases, different results. SERPS for both of them can be quirky, but for some searches, FAST goes deeper with more details.

So far only one out of 11 uses Yahoo and none use MSN or AOL. Is this just because you are all better informed than the average Joe Blow ... or is this representative of a trend?

I think new internet users tend to use MSN, AOL, Yahoo almost exclusively. There are probably very few new internet users at webmasterworld.

All the cool people are using Google ;)

Google exclusively.

My first experiment in web design was my local homepage. I have search boxes for Google, a dictionary, and a couple of commerce sites with informational content. In fact, at some point I'm going to have to add a WW search box since I spend an inordinate amount of time here. :)

Google as well, but without their toolbar.
I search from Mozilla's address bar, the Moz right-click menu and from an extra input field in my taskbar (created by an app called called something like Dave's Quicksearch Deskbar)
About 5-10% of my searches are in Google Groups, for tech troubleshooting and often web dev/scripting questions.
I've made some half-hearted attempts to switch to a meta engine (Ithaki.net or Vivisimo), but seem to come back to G every time.

Google. And sometimes I also use Google, but then on the weekends I'll usually end up using Google. ( To be honest, I use Yahoo! for categorical searches, and Overture to see who's serious about getting traffic for a certain keyword.)
