Hi all,

I'm looking into doing some web hosting at home (I don't have a static IP address so I'll be using a Dynamic DNS service). I need a cheap server which will run Windows NT Server (with IIS and Apache for hosting). I only have a 512k connection so it doesn't have to be top of the range. I don't mind a tower and I would prefer it to have a tape drive and be under £1,000. Any ideas where I can get one from CHEAP. Also, any comments on my plan are welcome.

Thanks,
Chris

p.s. I'm in the UK.

You don't need a "server" box per se. You can use any PC that will accept the NT software.

I think you're confused though about Apache and IIS. Both are web servers, you wouldn't run both on the same machine. Pick one and use that one.

If you don't have a static IP address, you will be hard pressed to serve web pages. You'll need a fixed IP in order for people to find you. Also, if you want to use a domain name, the IP address needs to be tied to the domain at a Name server.

Thanks txbakers,

I agree that any machine than can run the os is good enough. I might go for a mid to low range spec.

As far as the Apache/IIS problem. I'm going to use IIS with a url rewritting bolt on.

With the IP Address situation. There are dynamic dns services avaliable that allow you to host sites without a static ip address.

chris_f: If you have a 512k 24/7 line then you must already have static IP.

chris,

Do you have 2 static IP addresses, I think you need min of 2 to host sites in the UK?

I used a (in)famous UK ISP for this - also 512K:), great for testing, great for demos for clients - I just call up my office & get them to start the service. Access the sites by IP address only.
I wouldnt reccomend this for any pro-hosting, way to many issues.
