Server outage time

Sometimes I notice that my website is down for 5-10 min. I've contacted the hosting support but they told me that the outages are due to server reboots that happen on average once a day, and that this is normal.

Is it really normal?

Doesn't sound normal to me. I have 2 servers and they have been running for 79 days and 84 days respectively. I might do a reboot once every 3 months or so.

But of course, maybe they have problems with theirs and need to do a reboot more often.

My server has been up 69 days since reboot and that was only for a planned power upgrade at the hosting company so I had to take it down for a few hours to avoid crashing.

Are you hosting on an WinNT/2K/etc. box by any chance?

Windows has a tendency to start swapping like mad after a few days due to leaky apps so it may reboot daily just to avoid swap file thrashing.

if the client app is leaky it should be fixed, unlike the apache crutch of spawning processes.

windows 2000 servers can and do remain up for over a year at a time without reboots. mine do. and netcraft agrees.

Riiiight....

I have a pristine WIN2K box and a couple of apps that if left running a couple of days will make the box almost unusable. If you want to use the box with those apps you have to reboot every now and then. Keep those apps off and you never need rebooting.

Doesn't matter, I only put important stuff on Linux anyway ;)

I would start host hunting for sure.
