Defining Web 2.0

Scenario:-

CEO of corporate client says to you "what's web 2.0 and what should it mean to me, my company and my website?".

OK, I'll start, I can think of a couple of options:-

1. A BS framework enabling your website designer to pursuade you that you need a website redesign because your existing wesbite is "... just so Web 1.0"

2. A "mash-up" of different technologies. Web meets TV meets radio and other media types. See YouTube and Google "podcasting" for examples.

3. Community is King.

4. Push technologies, dynamic HTML and AJAX (yeah, basically all that stuff we started doing in 2001).

5. Lot's of 3D stuff (OK, I admit I'm scraping the barrel with that one).

Here are some more randoms:

Openness - providing APIs, Widgets of yor service to let other folks build on top.

User Generated Content - but owned and controlled by the user. Users can leave when they want, and take their stuff with them.

Wisdom of the Crowds - allowing the sites users to determine which content gets the most airplay - e.g. Digg.

Revenue Sharing - Sharing the revenues associated with the content contributions of the user. e.g. Squidoo

Customization / Personalization Through Networks - allowing your users to form self-selected networks which will alter their experience on the site. E.g. LinkedIn

TechCrunch knows who you are.

Lots of pastels in the design, and absurdly large font.

Well, I think you have to go to O'Reilly for this, since they have trademarked the term. (Actually, it is only trademarked by them in the field of tradeshows.)
