Subdomain 301 to a dir

Hi guys, I have a sub-dir on my site that holds a lot of supplimental usefull info. Technically it has all the rights in the world to be a subdomain, but for the purposes of having a large content site and easy maintanance I decided to have it as a dir. The question is: submission to most Web Directories requires a top-level domain. Will it be a good-enough of a work-around to setup a Tools.Examle.com and 301 it to Example.com/Tools for the purpose of submissions?
Has anyone done this before? Thanks!

I have't done a submission to a search engine in many years, so I think it's a moot question. It sounds like your approach might work for your purpose, but all you need is some good inbound links and you can forget about submission completely. With all the subdomain spamflying around lately, I wouldn't put up any subdomain these days without a very solid business purpose.
