Its time for my and my sites to move to a dedicated server, after using virtual hosts for some time.

I'm just not getting what this means! A dedicated server a michine with nothing on? Will I have to install php, perl, mysql..etc? Can I?

Someone give me the low-down as I cant find it anywhere else.

A dedicated server is a server that has, for example, Apache, MySQL, Perl and PHP installed and usually some sort of web interface (like you might be used to with your shared host but much more powerful). You can set up web sites just like on a hosted account but with no limits to how many domains and you can run up the cpu, disk space and ram to near 100% and no 'web host' is going to come down on you. It's also more private since you don't share the server with others so there's no chance another user can figure out how to read your files, etc (but you can still be hacked from the outside!). Also, you can set up whatever software you choose without having to get approval. Whether you get a managed dedicated server or one where you do almost all the work depends on your level of expertise and time you have to learn. You might want to start with a managed one until you get the hang of it.
