Hi!

We have recently launched our website and are wondering how to make money with it. It's that simple!

How do you guys make a living with websites?

I would love to know.

1. Get lots of traffic to your website.
2. Advertise a product, your own or someone else's.
3. Wait for the money to roll in.

It's that simple! :)

Well, the answer is - it's NOT that simple.

Running a website is a business. And you need business sense, and investment, and time, and hopefully a good product.

I make a very good living from my websites, but I provide a good service on the web, people want to use it, I get a good price for the service, and I provide excellent customer support.

It's a full time job, plus some.

The web, contrary to popular opinion, is not a get rich quick place.

The key word there is 'investment' in money, time, money, resources and money..

sorry, what do you mean by DN?

We have a website that is sort of a dive portal for diving. Focus is on offering diving holidays and diving courses.

However, it just doesnt seem to work. Like I said before, it just started. We also have launched a forum, but how do you get a forum going? Do you think it's better to wait with a forum until you have a lot of visitors? Maybe it scares people of when there is no activity?

It's about time we saw some sensible responses!

I also run a web site, full time, and yes it makes a living. Not a brilliant living, but a living none-the less.

As has been said, it is a full time job and a business.

Some people might like to give you the impression you can throw a few articles together, sign up for a Google Adsense account, and become a millionaire within months. You wont.

There are over 3 billion web sites out there, of which 99% are a waste of time and effort, receiving basically no visits. That still leaves some 500,000 receiving real traffic and as such having the potential to sell advertising space, or being used as advertising portals for an existing non-online business.

Not even pornography on the internet can guarrantee you an income anymore. There are a lot of competitors, and you have to know how to:

a) Provide what your readers want
b) Advertise so that people are aware of your site
c) Capitalise upon the potential of converting readership into cash, either by selling a product or advertising space.

Sorry to sound negative. This is business.

Matt

I think you are absolutely right.

It takes up a lot of time. I am not trying to make a full time living out of it, would be nice though!

My problem is that I don't have a lot of money and I can't afford advertising for my site. I believe my website is good with SEO but am really missing high quality inbound links and I dont really know how to get them.

Everytime I get a website to place them they ask for my statistics. Because we just started we dont have much. And a PR 5 site doesnt like to link to a PR 3. So what can I do?

Since you also stated you don't really have any money for advertising I would suggest you just keep looking for people to link to you. Don't worry about what there PR is. Also, you should know that for some subjects links can just be hard to come by and you just have to keep trying whatever ways you can think of to get them. For some subjects I only get about 1 link for every 30 well written e-mail request that I send out. Good quality links (not high PR links) are just not easy to get for many subjects, but you have to just be patient and keep searching for quality links with the understanding that they won't necessarily come easy. Where google is concerned, it will also take a while before you really see the benefit (rise in positions) of any links to your site.
A good blend of patience and persistance is very important to success online IMO.
good luck and keep at it.

You need to **find** a budget for advertising. This is probably going to draw flames, because I have read a lot of posts here to the effect that AdWords is a waste of money. But when my wife's site was ready (this is a VERY important point) we launched a $5/day adWords campaign.

Sales began coming in almost immediately, and have continued to do so with increasing frequency. It's been 6 months, and it's not paying the bills yet because she keeps turning all the profits back into inventory and expansion. But it's moving.

And our site is still PR ZERO. To heck with PR. It's not the only element.

People like what they find. They tell other people and even begin linking to you. You begin to creep up in the SERPS. Work on your site every day, make some positive contribution (add content, etc.)
