Are there any 'boxed' or open source social networking scripts?

I am wondering if anyone is aware of any boxed or open source social networking scripts? I am looking to open a niche social site and don't want to reinvent the wheel if possible. Just a generic networking script that could be customized as need would do. Anyone have any leads?
