The whole of SystemWorks came with free updates, and they do update rather often.
Both seem to work well, but McAfee pops up a window and forces you to stop what you are doing, click their link, then sometimes you even need to restart your computer....what a pain in the ***.
Norton updates quietly in the background and lets you know when its done. Pretty sweet.
My choice would be Norton.

I suggest you to use a firewall too; sometimes it is not so easy to intercept the latest virus, no matter if you have the last virus definition file.
NeedScripts, you may have answered a question for me. I have several neighbors looking for antivirus and firewall protection at the cheapest possible cost. So far, I've recommended Zone Alarm and Mailwasher (freebies). I wasn't sure if ZA worked well w/ Norton; I thought I heard someone somewhere say that ZA doesn't work well with ??? And, I can't remember what that other product is (I thought it might have been Mailwasher). I was going to suggest my neighbors plunk down a little bit of money on Norton Antivirus.
Does anyone know if there are any problems w/ AVG6.0 (another freebie) and ZA?
I would not hesitate to recommend AVG and ZA free versions. They should work well together.
I dont really like system works myself. Just because it allows the user to authorize changes in registry keys, etc... Which can and do cause problems, if you dont know what you are doing and changing.

Norton can be set for complete background updating. Good for business networks, too, with ability to set policies, etc.

I nagged all my friends about antivirus protection months ago and found out about one third of them had no idea if their machines were protected with current antivirus or not. I got all of them protected so they wouldn't infect me. :) Enlightened self-interest!
Every year I tell my newsletter subscribers about all this neat free protection they can download. Honestly, there are a lot of people that do not know that they have to renew definitions.

Had half Norton and half Mcafee throughout the office when I started here. Changed to all Norton within a year.
Mcafee was 'rude' when it found a virus - "stop what you're doing and deal with ME", and there were problems with updating subscriptions.
Norton is smooth, unobtrusive with updates and virus captures, and their customer service is excellent. I have twice had a problem in the last year where the net connection 'hung' when I was updating subscriptions (after putting in the CC details, waiting for their confirmation and renewal code). Quick email to them. Bang. Apology and FREE updates within hours. I like that.

Brad - you are so right about people not knowing about virus protection. I'm part of a local e-commerce support group here.. we ran a free seminar on viruses last year - had around 60 attendees (all business people, mostly smaller business - 1-20 staff). After the 'lecture' part of the session, I took the Q&A -
started with 'hands up who has AV software on their machines' - about three quarters of the hands went up.
'hands up who knows that their AV subscription and definitions are up to date' - a lot of confused faces and about one-third of the hands stayed up.
They just didn't understand.
It went down very very well, and there have been comments around the community about the reduction in virus transmissions locally - which goes to show what 60 newly clued in people can do in a region of 100,000 people.
