Although I only have a "few" people yet, I've noticed a change in my very life. I "feel" more relaxed, if you could call it that, and I am personally very affected by the people who enjoy my Websites.
In point of fact I simply decided almost as it were going to happen anyway, to go private. Yet it wasn't a thunderbolt moment. I feel that my creation was worth more and I made a decision. For me, it is the only decision.
Now, these few days after, I've begun to think differently entirely about the World Wide Web and "how it can be reached". I think going private might be a bit more difficult for Websites with over 50,000 usual visitors. They may have a harder time coming up with such a decision.
The wave of the future?
You tell me.
You got that last part wrong as well.
For any site, there are 2 groups of people:
1) People who have never been to the site and don't know about it's content
2) People who have already been to the site and know it
For group 1, very few of them are going to register to see a site they lkow nothing about. For group 2, many will be annoyed that they have to register to get the same access they used to have without registering. Even if the majority of group 2's people decide to register, you're going to get very few signups from group 1.
Viable in some intances.. sure why not.
I think Markus can attest to this more then most but a model I really like is:
1) Find something that is private or paid for.
2) Do it better (out SEO) and make it free (public).
3) Advertise.
It is a consumer model. You may feel more "relaxed" but how do your visitors feel? If I implemented the above model against your site who do you think would gain more new users per year?
Consider this though. I've already done so. And, of course, no one knows who or what I've created on the Internet. Be that as it may. What If I create something new within my Website Operations? Something altogether different than what has been attempted. A consumer motivated service that ignores pay pal, visa, e-bay, etc. What if I start a grass roots people driven advertising base at a ROCK BOTTOM price? And further, what if I begin to advertise (google adsense) that creation? At first only with the instructions and a sample ad. And what if enough people begin to buy these ad placements? I could literally create a community of consumers on my own. Then my Private Status on the World Wide Web would be seen as something far more powerful, than say, ebay.
And honestly, I think that ebay needs to come down.
How will you make any money from AdSense? Since Google can't crawl your pages, you'll probably only have PSAs.
Why will people register for your site? So far it only sounds like they're going to have access to a closed group of advertising.
Okay, I will concede that in some cases the "exclusive group" mentality can bring a premium in prices. But exclusivity by its very nature means a small group. Expand the group and you lose the value of that exclusivity.
And honestly, I think that ebay needs to come down.
