How do I notify myself when the website goes down?

I can write a simple script which polls the website (from another machine) to determine if the site is up.

But if it's down, is there any service out there which I can use to send me a call to my cell/mobile phone or something?

Email is ok, but I want to be notified if the site goes down while I'm sleeping too.

There are many solutions, one of which is a free server management program ('Nix preferred) called Webmin [ [webmin.com...] ]

In and amongst its many modules is the "Others" category, which contains "System and Server Status", from where you can set up alerts. To send a text message or page, refer to your phone/pager provider notes, but you can probably do it via email/SMS, if the price is right.

Make sure whatever solution you use has the capability to use different alert methods. It's no good to set it up to let you know if Sendmail has gone down if you're using Sendmail to send it.

(I'm not shilling for the company, I'm a longtime user ... first time recommender. ;) )

I use websitepulse for a couple of my critical sites and get an alert e-mail and SMS msg to my cell phone.
I consider it an essential monitoring service for my 'software-as-a-service' business.

I use Hyperspin's service and I'm satisfied with it.

We currently use Nagios at my job.

You can set it to monitor and report by email, alpha-numeric pager, instant messenger, analog telephone or cell phone.
