What knowledge is needed to run vps

I want to access certain things so I can have more control of my website . I understand how to run things threw a shared host control panel, especially with this board's help(THANK YOU ALL) . If and when I change to a vps ,is there things I should study for now so I want be lost or is it the same as running a shared host account?

also,I can add certain control panels ,therefor I know what it is ,but I am confused about the os like redhat and fedora and others. How does it play a role in me running or building a website?

I get it now. After several searches, for some reason, I couldn't connect the hats (red hat and fedora) and its meanings; but now I can. Simple os that's it. I am becoming more of a computer guru these days. YEAH!. I Know I'm miles away still.
