I opened my site about 15 hours ago and put a few links around some other sites. I checked to see the hits counter and i already had 1869 hits. Is that good for the first day? i was pretty excited. I dont have much content, im still working on puting some up and i havent even been approved by adsense yet.

Also do you know if the site counts my visits?

I was wondering what were your first say stats? Is this site doing good?

thanks guys

A "hit" is generally referenced as "requested something from server" - that can also be images. A single page, with 2 graphic images and a CSS file, would cause 4 "hits" to be registered in the log.

You need to look more at page views and unique visitors - those are the metrics that are the most useful.

Either way, good start - well done. Keep increasing the content, getting more backlinks from other sites and watch those page titles and navigation link anchor texts.

Keep an eye out for the search traffic. When it does arrive, monitor the keywords users are finding you by. That will tell you what they want to know - it can also often inspire a new page of content.

Hi Dr_JohnM and welcome to WW. Get a good tracker for keyword tracking; if you are new to website development, read some books and keep reading forum posts (which you obviously do already). If you google "keyword ranking", you will get a reference to a very useful tool that allows you to track the ranking of your site on all major search engines for specific keywords that you define.

Get an account as soon as possible and check frequently - for the fun of it and because it's important to see how your site develops.

Oh, and if the 1800 visitors are correct, don't forget to put some links to my site, it's a luck-site, kind of like a bunny's foot, it will bring blessings over your life and all your pages ;)

Get google analytics, it is free, and I am not sure if they are accepting new sign ups but they have what you need to track your visitors.
