Can old content on pages be negative for seo?

It is bad to disply random text on theese pages?

Here are the facts:

My website gets about 10-15 pages of new fresh contend a day and I thik for the moment this is good. Googlebot is always on my site and I have a lot of indexed pages. The problem is that after an user submit a story (that is the reason I get new content) the page that is created can't be modified later by the user and so I have 1 year old pages in my site.

I heard that google make a difference between those old pages and the ones with new and "updated" content. I inserted a php script that display small pices of random text in those pages. It is bad? Please tell me your opinion.

Thank you,
Michael.

If it makes no sense to a user reading the page, then it's bad.

There are plenty of authority pages that haven't changed in years. If your page is cited by other domains more than anyone elses is, you're the authority no matter what the age of the content.

I would remove that PHP script ASAP. It won't hurt you to have an extra 1000 pages with old content. Actually, it can only benefit you.

The text pices is displayed as "advices", on a side block, not mixed in the content of the page. I removed teh scripts but I really want to hear your opinion about this. Thanks.
