Directory for Tourism

Which software to use?

Hi ya'll,

Seeking software to create a directory
for a travel website for hundreds of
different categories, countries, activities,
etc.

Anyone know of any good ones?

I've likely looked at >1,000 versions of online directories - just to see how they look.

Mostly my reaction has been "yeech".

You can play will all manner of scripts - free and paid - but whatever you do I suggest you spend some time customizing the script so your website, at the very least, presents a nice, clean visual scan that is easy to navigate.

Oh, and whilst you're at it, try to remember that the visitor is more important than the LARGE name of your directory and that ubiquitous Adsense ads may not have the greatest visitor appeal. Just a thought.

Thanks, but I'm not a programmer and I need to
find software for a new project that I'm going
to recommend to the CEO of this directory.

The directory now is a not very good at all and I'm
trying to find something better.

This tourism directory has to have countries,
states, provinces, as well as all the things
you can think invloving the tourism industry.

The traveller has to drill down to exactly
where and what they want to do.

Any ideas?

I think people are getting too caught up on the "travel" subject of the thread. When you look at it, what you are asking forward is just a straightforward directory structure.

We've always rolled our own, so I can't give you any advice for specific s/w.

No matter what advice you get, ask for a URL of an old implementation and then do a Google site: command for the domain name. This will narrow down the list to a manageable number and also solve the crawlabillity problem. If buying a script, find out how customisable it is or check the freelance sites to find out how much it would cost you to customise it.
