I am a complete novice...Is it possible to get traffic to a website through free submission to search engines? or is this method something from the dark ages?

Welcome to WW, Rockwell!

Yes, it is still possible to gain traffic from free search engine submissions. But it sounds like you're referring to directory submissions?

When you submit your site URL to DMOZ, Google, Yahoo, etc., they will hopefully add your site to their directories after some time. This alone, will cause your site to show up in directory searches and help generate some traffic.

But don't rely strictly on directory submissions. The big key is to establish a website with lots of good content. Afterwards, those search engines...(Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc.) will begin indexing your site pages and hopefully those pages will start showing in search engine results.

The higher your site ranks in those results, the better your chance of having surfers see your site.
