If two sites have the same IP address, can people connect them?

I use Godaddy's virtual dedicated hosting service, and have one IP address, and am hoping to host multiple sites on it. However, I don't want people to be able to figure out that one site owned by the same owner as the other. Do I run this risk if they're on the same IP address?

Multiple sites on the same IP is very common, but yes, it is possible to find out exactly which sites are on the same IP and possible see a connection.

There are plenty of cases of unrelated sites sharing a single IP at a given hosting company, so that in itself wouldn't reveal any further relationship. But if there also other elements of similarity -- domain registration information, contact info on the sites, interlinking, design similarities, etc. -- many people would consider the combination of factors to be conclusive.

are the domain names registered to the same person?

do the websites have a common footprint? eg. are they built in the same style, are filenames similiar, is the structure of the site similiar, do they have the same js names or css names, is the code laid out in the same way? do they have affiliate links with the same aff id?

do they link to each other?

there are so many ways of telling, an unsophisticated user can't tell but as users have more experience and/or data patterns to go on (such as search engines) then they can tell very easily.

Thanks for the responses. My next question is, what if someone had only the IP address to go on. Would they be able to see all the domains that are on that IP address somehow?

...or to put it another way, if someone finds one of my sites, will they be able to deduce(sp?) the other sites hosted on the same IP?

it is not simple without a DNS registry that you can data mine.
There are tools known as reverse ip lookup.
that will list all you sites www.whois.cs shows how many sites are registered for the IP but you have to pay to see the sites

MSN allows you to search by IP address, free.
[search.msn.com...]

although I think some redirects will end up showing at the wrong location.

awall19, my sites aren't coming up when searched by IP. I guess that's a good thing ;)

Just curious- why should you be worried if people can figure out that you are the same owner? Do you have something to hide? :)

Haha. Well, nothing to hide really. It's more that I want one of my sites to be completely anonymous. On my other site, I'm very open about my identity, so if people can link the two, the anonymity might be gone.
