Hello all -

If I sound irritated, I am. Please don't take it personally. I've spent a million hours working on my website using Dreamweaver, and now that I'm ready to upload it, I keep getting, this message that ' an FTP error occurred-cannot make connection to host.' I'm on a mac 10.4.3., have a yahoo webhosting account, and I get my service through aol. Can anyone be so kind to tell me what the hell I'm doing wrong? I've read all the manuals and nothing explains what is happening.

Well it can be any of the following.

FTP username is incorrect
FTP password is incorrect
FTP Server host is incorrect

Remote directory where files will be uploaded to is incorrect.

A firewall blocking port 20 or 21 for FTP?
AOL blocking port 20 or 21 for FTP?

Could also be a temp thing and it might work later.

Is it an established URL?

Could it be still be being mapped?

Hi again -

Didn't know about the port 21 thing. Put that in and finally it connected. Now it keeps stalling while connecting to server. Any suggestions?

>>Any suggestions?

Use a separate FTP client. Cuts DW crashes 50% to just over 100/day.

Can you give more info?

I've found that dreamweaver is not the best way to upload. (sometimes messes up the links if youre not carefull)

use this program: Smartftp

<snip>

Just put in your username and password! (please make sure what directory you should upload your files to! eg. public_html..)

A few first things to check:

- address of the server, have you told Dreamweaver that correctly? No typos? Can you ping it?

- username and password correct?

- do you have a firewall (inc Windows Firewall)? (you may need to set a new firewall rule to allow ftp)

- are you behind a router? (might need to fiddle with it).

hth, a.

think I have everything else. Found out I needed to include port 21. Now the server keeps stalling as it uploads.

'Behind a router' - what's this? Where would I find it?

Thanks everyone.
