How is this coded? Subtitles added to clips

I can't drop the link here but there's a site I found and I would like to develop the idea and make it better.

There are video clips on the site in a foreign language.

There is a subtitle bar over each clip and the words "Line 1", "Line 2" appear every few seconds through the clip.

On the left, there is a small form where you can submit your own text for each line of the subtitle. At the end, you press submit and the whole clip is played with your subtitles added.

There are thousands and thousands of customised clips in the database. The URL's end with?clip=53886. I presume it is only the 3 lines of text that are being saved and not whole videoclips each time.

What sort of coding would you require for that? How is it being done?

hmm, yes, I think it is a combo of flash for the actual presentation and php/mysql for the db back end stuff.

why did you presume it was flash? Is that the only real way of doing it? Is it easy to add customisable text to flash?

Flash integrates very well with database and/or flat text files to allow customisable text and many other things. Whether its easy depends on your knowledge of databases and actionscript
