Spam from my domain

Hello,

Yesterday I had about 200 'failure notice' mails in my mailbox. The original message contains spam and the 'from' address is a non existing address from my domain.

Is someone sending spam from my domain?
Can this hurt me in any way, like getting my domain on a spam-list?
Can I do something about it?

My hosting support says someone is faking the headers of his spam mails so they look like they come from my domain.

Cheers,

Dirk.

Your host is right - and it happens all the time. It won't have any direct impact on your domain as it will be clear the return address is fake.

From your end, count yourself lucky you only got 200 bounces - sometimes on a big spam run you can get thousands. I am guessing you have a catch-all email account: if this is the case, you should consider bouncing incorrectly addressed mail instead.

I happened to me and I put a message on my site because so many people were visiting to see what it was all about.

The spam was about deleting their account and terminating their service.

The note did the trick ... it happens to millions of us!
