We are currently running our website on an AS/400 using the standard HTML server. Occasionally when I look in my error log files, we get this message.
[27/May/2002:09:42:40 +0500] [OK] [host: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] SSL Handshake failed. RC -16 ERRNO 0
After talking with IBM, they claim that the reason is because our server is set to cipher strength 128, and some older browsers are having difficulty communicating.
The deal is, when someone gets this error, after they click on a submit or continue button to move to the next page while in an SSL session, the page does not go ahead, and they get an immediate "server not found" message. If they hit the back button, then try it again, sometimes it actually works.
It has actually happened to me once while testing, and I'm using IE 5.5 SP2 with 128 bit SSL. So I don't personally buy IBM's excuse that it is just because some people have older browsers. Another customer called me one day who the same thing happened to and she was using IE 6.
Has anyone else seen this type of message? If you haven't, please reply back "Sorry dude, sucks to be you".
We too are running our production websites on the iSeries platform and are receiving the
SSL Handshake failed. RC -16 ERRNO 0
error in the error logs. IBM has also given us some BS that the error occurs when a user drops the secure connection (ie. by closing their browser.) I don't buy it.
Have you made any progress with this error? We haven't really heard any noise from any customers but I don't like seeing that error repeatedly. Thanks!
Steve
No we haven't been able to resolve the problem. Funny thing, IBM eventually gave us the same answer they gave you (a month or so after I wrote that post). I KNOW that the users aren't closing their browsers.
You and I should talk and see if we can compare notes and maybe go back to IBM. This is really annoying to us. To call me, just go to my profile and click on my site. Use the customer service number on the CS page (in the banner) and ask for Peter.
Thanks
