Smart lampposts that could provide high-speed internet access are set to go on trial in Scotland.
Looks like a great idea to me. Seems to be on a campus, initialy, but wouldn't it be great if it were rolled out elsewhere?

A UK company that has created wireless hotspots in stations, coffee shops and hotels around the UK is planning to launch city-wide wi-fi this spring.... ...will bring wireless broadband to nine cities including London, Manchester and Birmingham...

I especially like to see the free WIFI cloud concepts (rather than hotspots), as Google is planning for Mountain View.
Free and ubiquitous broadband is .... the ... answer to many questions about "how do we serve up internet?"
that way muscians get fat cash... no one has to worry about pirated bs
The big advantage I see to the wireless cloud is.. no wires, thus allowing more competition to the internet pipe coming into the house. I tried a dsl connection for a while to see if indeed there was a cost reduction over my tv-cable-net. After the taxes added to the phone/net bill there wasn't much of a deduction.
Heck... we're still getting zapped by a tax on the phone bill for the Spanish-American war in the 1800's .
And just recently the cable tv bill went up $4... which is about an 8% increase.
If tv has continually gone pay for view I don't see how the net will be free in the long run. If indeed "advertising" replaces the "usage" fee... the product price will just go up.
