Google Inc. and Microsoft Corp. are setting aside their bitter animosity to back a new Internet research laboratory aimed at helping entrepreneurs introduce more groundbreaking ideas to a mass audience.

Sun Microsystems Inc. also is joining the $7.5 million project at the University of California, Berkeley.

Staffed initially by six UC Berkeley faculty members and 10 computer science graduates, the lab plans to develop an array of Web-based software services that will be given away to anyone who wants it.

Curious that the entire staff is only from UC Berkeley. Wonder why no outsiders were hired?

Oooh - I'd love to get a fly-on-the-wall seat at board meetings :)

Do you think they'd take my fifty quid for a seat on the board?

Because $7.5M won't cover many real world salaries and facilities, so short of oursourcing it to a small country where you could just buy a village of workers outright for that price, students will work on grad projects for some bucks and a grade.

Don't expect world class QA'd software unless Google or MS plans on testing the results themselves and performing code reviews.

Yes, exactly! I wonder how many of their staff stick around if they are actually successful at inventing something useful enough to make some real money?
