Maximum URL length

Are there any limitations for URL length in terms of being search engine friendly? I am trying to find balance between putting as many keywords in the URI as possible and not making it too long. Would some search engines for example not index a page which exceeds certain number of characters in the URL?
Thank you in advance.

You may find that putting keywords in your URL's may not help you much anymore. (At least in Google).

BeeDeeDubbleU,

Since when? I just recently saw search results come up with url match (url was highlighted) for specific keywords. And that was on google too.

In either case I'm going to do it because I've got it all ready anyway. It's just a question of how long a url can / should be?

It depends on the age of your site. I believe that keyword loaded URL's may cause your site to enjoy a more prolonged stay in the sandbox :(

What is this notion based on? Could you give me some more info / resources. Would also be useful for other people reading this thread.
Thanks.

It's based only on my personal experience and gut feel. I have no evidence to offer.

Did you have a problem with only one website or multiple sites utilizing keyword based urls? How many sites if yes? I couldn't find anything confirming your opinion so far.
