i have a html sitemap for my site and an xml version for google sitemaps.
My question is; do I need to include every page of my blog into both sitemaps? At present, I am only listing the main page.

Yeah, you should have all your pages in there. Google has some 3rd party tools to create your sitemap.xml file that you can use. Or, if you have log access, some of the tools will build a sitemap based on your server's log file(s)
