How do you build this?

Anyone have experience building a tagging system? I know I'm seeing it everywhere in the 2.0 space but it doesn't look like anything more then user based categorization? Is that right or am I missing something (probably am)?

I wouldn't always assume that when it comes to The Next New Thing. ;)

I'm certainly not an expert, but from what I've read about tagging, it is just what you describe: user-based categorization. (Just like "web ontology" can be translated "a list of permissible keywords and tags.") That doesn't mean it isn't interesting and/or useful, but it isn't necessarily a vast intellectual breakthrough.

it seems like the tag systems simply roll everything into this type of structure:

somedomain.com/tagname

or

somedomain.com/tags/widgets
