Need Help With My Site's Spiderability.

Ahoy hoy all,

<snip>
My site is one of the most popular Indiana Jones fan sites on the web and I've been having some problems with my site...

First of all, my site is very well known on the web and has been linked by all the major movie websites (<snip>). However, when you go to Google and type in "Indiana Jones" my site doesn't show up on the first ten pages. Now, to be fair, I am very unorthodox in my web design since I am self-taught (probably not such a good idea now that I'm looking back... :-/) but what is done is done. I have a feeling it's because the spiders can't pick up any of the text or links in my pages because there are too many nested tables (yet I'm not entirely sure that is the problem). I found searchengineworld's spider test and tried it out, and that's what led me to that conclusion when the test showed no actual text or links on my site. So I cheated and put some 1x1 images with links and alt text in some of the outer tables to see if it would pick it up and it did (but the links are static and it may not help with Google at all). However it's hard to put text there, and I have a feeling Google is looking for actual text. Also, when I do a site search for my website, I get a bunch of dead links (and arbitrary links) on Google: <snip> (also notice that most of the links listed on that search don't have text from the page, strange).

And here's another reference site in case you need it: <snip>

Honestly, I'm at my wits end. I've tried everything I can think of, but I can't get it to work. I am open to any and all suggestions and/or help you guys can provide. I am also willing to provide you with any source code and actual page files if it would help.

I thank you for taking the time to read my plea for help and I sure hope you can give me some good info. :)

Hi DrJones56, welcome to WebmasterWorld.com
From reading your post it sounds like your site may indeed have some spiderability problems but I think for a phrase like indiana jones it's more likely the popularity of that phrase is the reason your home page isn't ranking. There are about 15.7 million pages about indiana jones so there's a lot of competition. You should still work on getting your pages spiderable which mostly means that you should have well formed HTML and keep in mind that a good title tag is very important. Doing a view source and then copying that into a good HTML editor should give you a good idea of what problems there might be, using the w3c validator might help also.
