What do these emails mean?

Hi,

I've been getting emails lately with both the sender,to and subject all showing:

admin@foo.com (sometimes its help@foo.com)

I've had at least one for every domain that I own and have a catch set up on all the domains. Strange thing is that there is no message part to it. I do not have any email-script forms on these domains.

What is happening here? Is a spammer just wanting to see if they get bounced back or not (the emails addresses are not listed anywhere)?

Thanks

bill

Sounds like they're probing to see which addresses will accept mail.

Are there any blank images inside the email?

Check the source.

Anyway Bill is on the spot. There are common name@domain.com types. I've been intentionally giving bait out to spammers to learn how they behave and am learning what is a bot and what is not.

If you are getting emails sent to a few randomly created email addresses like you are then they are in a sense pinging for valid addresses. While you and I would obviously not follow a spammer's email it's good to learn how the scum of the internet pond operate. My investigation has gotten pretty interesting but I like to keep the scum on their toes. :)

Interesting also that they seem to be collecting data from whois registrar information.

I have a domain that was recently registered with no content or links to it.

I've started receiving e-mails addressed to admin@mydomain.com and info@mydomain.com - supposedly from the same domain. Plus messages from that obliging person asking me to 'update your directory entry, if you don't mind'.
