Help? Changed server

I just used my control panel to change my site from a Wnidows to Linux server and am now getting a message saying "Bad Request (Invalid Hostname)".

I contacted my hosts and they told me it can take 24-48 hours to correct...i wish i had never changed anything now - will things really take this long and could my rankings go?

just to add to the above, when some people click on my site they get a "forbidden" message.

Is it a general rule that, after changing website servers it can take 24 - 48 hours? I am really worried my google / msn / yahoo rankings could be affected by my site being down!
