Query about link: results on MSN

Does anyone else see this type of sites?

Not sure if this is in the right forum, but I couldn't find anything else that came close.

When I do link:www.mysite.com on MSN I get a list of my expected backlinks. However the last three entries are backlinks from sites I have never contacted and are not really on the same topic either. Also their url is of the form 'sitename.info/info/widget' (no www) where widget is the topic of my website and sitename seems to be some unrelated name.

On the page that links to me is a list of links to other sites similar to mine in content. The sitename.info site seems to have no relevance whatsoever to my topic and just seems to list sites, it has zero PR and has adsense on it.

My question is, is this some dodgy website linking to me, and if so will I get penalised in some way? Bad neighbourhood and all that.

Any help greatly appreciated

JB

Hi John,

This is what's know as a scraper site [webmasterworld.com] - each page contains adsense (above the fold) and some other 'results' scraped from one or more search engines appear below the fold.

One way this could negatively affect you is if the scraper quotes a large snippet from your site and the search engines incorrectly penalise you (the original author) for duplicate content. However, unless you want to spend all day emailing dodgy 'webmasters' requesting to be removed from their pages, it's best just to ignore and hope the search engines wise up soon.

Thanks for that arran. I wasn't sure what a scraper site would look like but I guess I know now.

Like you say, I'll just have to hope that the SEs wise-up.

Many thanks for your prompt reply.
