Task Manger - Not working

When I press crtl-alt-del the windows security box appears and looks fine with lock computer, log off shutdown,etc

When i press Task Manager it just takes me back to the desktop?

Ive recently installed SP2 for win XP (wish i never now!)

So i dont know if this is the cause of the problem, ive also run Norton Anti Virus - but no viruses were found, any ideas?

Try right-clicking an empty area of the taskbar and selecting "Task Manager..." from the popup menu.

Norton Anti Virus - but no viruses were found,..it couldn't find them if they jumped up and bit it in the neck ..

taskmanager is actually one of the first things to disable ..look for diskeeper lite ( freeware for doze it uses backoffice manager but way faster as the onboard 'doze "defrag" lies to you about what it did )..ie : most times it didn't defrag at all ..just moved the head on your HD some to fool you ..and showed you some cute GUI stuff

then look for "clean up" ..temp file , GID remover etc ..all the stuff that 'doze opens and forgets to bin when it shuts ..

then look for a real back up prog there are many ..use incremental "if diff" back ups to usb key ( not to another part of the HD or even a different HD ..too long to explain here ..just that's wrong!)..

then kill windoze automated **** ups ..( updates ) ...dou you really want to be a beta tester for redmonds latest patch :)..

oh ..and watch your spooler ..they can get antsy and lock up all kinds of stuff ..

clear your clip board each time you exit an app ..

so what do you need taskmanager for ..?

Verify that the file System32\TaskMgr.exe still exists. If does not exist (or is corrupt) it must be restored.

Sounds like a virus, but it could be a simple file corruption.
