Is there a limit to the amount of files in a web folder?

Just wondered whether there is a limit to the amount of files in a web folder?

If you're talking Linux using an ext42 file system then I believe the limit is 2^15 which is 32,768 files

i currently have 2200 files in a folder, but when i use any ftp upload program I can only browse to around the letter 'T'. Ftp programs just wont seem to display after around 2000 files. Just worrying if servers, search engines etc set a limit.

Hi Mike.

Have you thought of structuring your data into sub-directories? If you're concerned about spidering you might even think of using keywords in your directory names.

this is a sub-directory :)

but is where all the main pages and images are, but restructure would mean losing the postioning of pages in Google. Not sure how they would handle 500 pages changing url.

i just didnt expect the directory to grow so large over the past few years.

well i've just checked a directory of mine that has 5,000 files in it and cuteftp shows them no problem ... maybe there is an issue with your ftp prog?

I dont see a software/hardware issue being the determining factor. But usability.

i am using ws_ftp95 and CoffeeCup ftp, both stop at the same file. Will try cuteftp.
