Hi,

Just wondering if anyone out there might be able to give me some advice as to which mailserver works better with microsoft outlook 2003. Currently, i am using merak mailserver and would be happy if there are other choices available to consider.

I'd like to apologise in advance if i am not allowed to post such question here.

Thank you in advance

Microsoft Outlook is just a client that connects to a domain. It really has no bearing on any mailserver that people use.

If you use MS Exchange you can use some features that you can't if employ other mail servers. The extra features are things like meeting scheduling and room booking (although no where I have worked really got these features working well so they were of dubious worth).

If all you want is a mail server there are plenty of open source (e.g. free) mail servers. Personally my favourite is Courier because it uses the maildir format and is easy to set up. Popular alternatives include sendmail (the most popular, it can be made to scale but is a complete pig to configure) and QMail (very secure - I found it somewhat difficult to configure).

If you are going to the trouble of running your own mail servers set up an IMAP server while your at it. It gives you more flexability and you will never want to go back to POP mail. Be warned that setting up and running an email system is _not_ for the faint hearted.
