Is it possible to write some script or use some software to auto launch an exe file as soon as you put a flash drive into a PC running windows - I've tried a inf file which works on a CD but doesn't work on a flash drive. I'm also trying to workout how to change the icon on the exe file in XP? Yorkie

If you want to configure the PC then try this. MS Windows TweakUI (found here [microsoft.com...]

The above URL may also have something for "tweaking" the drive but you may need to write a vbscript and autorun this somehow (but I do not have said script for you I'm afraid).

Thanks Fish Eye

Unfortunately I'm sending the Flash drive out as a Promotional freebee and I carn't expect the receiver to tweak their computers but i will look at the site you said to see if I can find a script to put on the Flash drives, cheers,

I believe, but am not certain, that auto-run is achived by some flash drives by virtue of them identifying themselves incorrectly. For instance, if a flash drive identifies itself as a CDROM drive, the chances are it will autorun (but there may be other side effects).

Otherwise, a registry hack will be required to enable this feature which is no good for this problem.

I think it's worth pointing out that that the first computer viruses (that I've heard of) afflicted the Commodore Amiga. On this computer, all floppy disks effectively had auto-run enabled. I think there is a lesson here.

Something happened to that URL - it should be just [microsoft.com...]

I have found a drive that claims to provide the sort of functionality you are looking for. It is configured as both CD-ROM and a flash drive and has a developers kit with it. Sticky me and I'll send the URL. The software kit appears to be custom built for this particular drive.
