Does anything rival Google in the UK?

Google supplies around 60% of our sites traffic. We appear
to rate equally well on all other rival search engines and
directories , but feel lost as to how to get more traffic
from other engines and directories, any ideas?

More seriously look at industry specific directories and portals, local directories and portals.

Love it or hate it, MSN can bring a lot of visitors to a site. If you have the budget! Use a combination of Looksmart, Ink and Overture for excellent results.

I'm in the same boat 60%+ traffic now from Google, despite having some very good rankings with MSN and others, it seems Joe public have just abandon all the other UK SE's

I have to agree Looksmart is the one for MSN UK a good listing can bring quality traffic. Since I let my PFI pages lapse on INK more pages listed and traffic up but would not rule out PFI.

For me I find ask UK a better bet, more buying customers but you do have to pay for it, hate it but it works.

I have noticed a climb in hits from AV nothing to jump up and down about but an improvement.

I am considering espotting at present for Yahoo since the uk results are such a mess.

Just about zero from anywhere else but that may just be my industry.
I do believe that you have to think about and experiment as to which search engines and Directories your typical customers use.

Not alone in the UK,

With my site I reach several languages and do well on many search engines.

January 2003 = 91% of SE referrals, for Google and its partners.

And, the more pages of content, the more you rely on- or thank Google.

From the replies here, I guess the answer to my original question is YES with MSN the number 2. I haved noticed an improvement from ASK over the last 2 months, they have supplied around 7% this month. I do think that the BBC could end up supplying more hits in the future, and because they do not use any of the paid advertising this will be all about optimisation of your site and top rated pages in the results.

Can you expand on the Looksmart thing? You don't PFI on Ink, but do pay for Looksmart is that right? I had assumed it would work better the other way round, and so perhaps I should pay for Looksmart!

Espotting is worth it I think. Cheaper than overture still.

Otherwise Me too, for Google! Freeserve and Ask both bring in sales.
