TalkTalk, one of the UK's major ISPs has, again, been hit by a data breach. This is not the first time, but this latest one seems much more significant. I know a few people with TalkTalk accounts and some are getting many calls per day from scammers following up from the previous data breach. [bbc.co.uk] Those calls are coming in such a long time later that it's likely this data from the latest breach is going to filter through the scammers for some time to come.

It said there was a chance that some of the following customer data, not all of which was encrypted, had been accessed:

  • Names and addresses
  • Dates of birth
  • Email addresses
  • Telephone numbers
  • TalkTalk account information
  • Credit card and bank details

Be aware TalkTalk customers are being targetted by phone calls from bogus 'TalkTalk fraud' people trying to get them to install remote control software.

I was one of those TT customers from the original data breach of last year. Yes, last year. The database was stolen and since then there have been up to four calls per day from scammers trying to fool me. I tried different kinds of approach to them over time and it made absolutely no difference. The database must have been bought over an over again by different scammers, and they were absolutely not going to give up.
Automation is a wonderful thing, on both sides of the call.
I am no longer a TT customer, but that won't stop the scammers.
